Time of Flight

Depth sensors based on the Time of Flight technology provide two types of data foreach pixel simultaneously: depth information and intensity data (grey value) to the sensor.

A ToF Depth Sensor consists of four main components:

  • Sensor IC (ToF IC)
  • Lense
  • Active Illumination (IR or LASER)
  • Central Processing Unit (CPU)

The active illumination module determines modulated Infrared Light (IR) in the near-infrared. The object that is located in the field of view reflects light which is projected via the lens onto the depth sensor IC. Taking the angular phase shift into consideration the distance data from the ToF IC to the object for each pixel will be calculated individually.

A 3D point cloud incl. intensity data per pixel is the result of one measuring cycle. Our products achieve up to 160 measuring cycles per second!

Advantages of Time of Flight
Depth Sensors

  • Independent from ambient light
    ToF Depth sensor are active systems, which emit its own modulated light (e.g. infrared). Only modulated light is appraised by the sensor.
  • Easy setup
    No moving parts
    (in comparison to mirrors of laser scanner)
  • Less required space
    Lens and illumination are close together (compare Stereo – and Triangulation systems).
  • Speed
    ToF Depth Sensors capture the observed surroundings for each pixel simultaneously. Therefore a frame rate up to 160 frames-per-second (FPS) is possible.
  • Efficient data analysis
    ToF Depth sensors deliver direct distance data, therefore it is possible to do a threshold analysis to determine the position and significance of objects.
  • Independent from patterns
    ToF Depth sensors are independent of the color of the target and do not need specific patterns or explicit color distinction to determine the distance (compare
    stereo systems).
